MEDIZIN - Tranexamic acid – why how and when? (Queeneth Kalu MD) (2023)


Tranexamic acid is a pharmacologic agent of proven efficacy and safety  in minimizing blood loss.  In this keynote address, Dr Queeneth Kalu examines the history of tranexamic acid, its application in bloodless surgery, and practical aspects for the clinician.

Dr. Kalu is an Associate Professor in the University of Calabar and Chief Consultant Anesthesiologist at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.  A member of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences Distinguished Lecture Series Committee and Faculty Representative to the Faculty of Pharmacy. She is a past Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital and the current head of the Anaesthesiology department. She holds the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) as well as a Post Fellowship Diploma in Anaesthesia (DA) from the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists.  She has special interest in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Anaesthesia Quality and Safety, Intensive care, Obstetric Anaesthesia and analgesia as well as Global Health as it relates to Anaesthesia. She is the South-South Airway Lead for the Society of Airway Management, Nigerian Chapter.  She is well published and a member of several professional societies, including the Bloodless Medicine & Surgery Society and Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management. A mother of two, Dr Kalu is industrious, creative, hardworking, a great motivator, intelligent and a good team player.
