MEDIZIN - Compassion and ethics in a Bloodless Medicine & Surgery Programme (Margit Kaufman MD) (2023)

A Bloodless Medicine & Surgery Programme (BMSP) provides quality medical care to a wide variety of patients who decline blood transfusion.  Compassion characterizes the multidisciplinary team of experts who provide care in a BMSP, as Dr Margit Kaufman beautifully highlights in this lecture.

Dr. Margit Kaufman specializes in the fields of anesthesiology, critical care medicine, and patient blood management. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from a University of Medicine and Dentistry – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and subsequently completed a residency in Anesthesiology. She then pursued a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, during which she developed a particular interest in patient blood management. Her research in this field has focused on optimizing blood utilization in critically ill patients, reducing unnecessary transfusions, and minimizing the risks associated with transfusions. As the Medical Director of the Institute for PBM & Bloodless Medicine and Surgery at Englewood Health, Dr. Kaufman has led numerous initiatives aimed at improving patient outcomes through evidence-based blood management practices. Most recently, Dr Kaufman has created a mobile and web-based app to improve compliance for patient blood management metrics and improve efficiency of the treatment for patients for whom blood transfusion is not an option. Dr. Kaufman is dedicated to advancing the field of patient blood management, improving patient outcomes, and promoting safe and effective healthcare practices.
