World Bloodless Surgery Day (WBSD), May 16, marks the pioneering work of the Father of modern Bloodless Surgery, Dr Denton Cooley. On that day in 1962, Dr Cooley successfully performed the first bloodless open heart surgery on a Jehovah's Witness, previously thought to be impossible. It turned out that the 'impossible' was not only possible, but accompanied by superior clinical outcomes, compared with transfused cases. Dr Cooley's seminal work became the basis for modern bloodless surgery and patient blood management.
