Iron deficiency anaemia is the commonest form of anaemia worldwide. Intravenous iron has emerged as the rational treatment for iron deficiency anaemia. A foremost guru of iron therapy in the world, Professor Manuel Muñoz, shares some practical points for clinicians - the nuts and bolts in respect of intravenous iron therapy.
Prof Muñoz is currently Professor, Department of Surgical Specialties, Biochemistry and Immunology, School of Medicine, University of Málaga, Málaga, Spain. Since 2000, he has been actively researching Patient Blood Management strategies with emphasis on perioperative anaemia management, bleeding control, and cell salvage. He has over 200 publications in the field, including original research, reviews, consensus statements and book chapters.
Prof Muñoz is the coordinator of international consensus documents on anaemia management in surgery, obstetrics and cancer, and on postpartum haemorrhage management. Presently he is the coordinator of the Seville’s Document update. He has supervised 15 PhD Thesis on topics related to PBM, 3 of which with honours. His clinical areas of interest are perioperative anaemia management, with special interest in iron homeostasis and point-of-care monitoring.
Prof Muñoz is a member of several professional societies and groups including Network for advancement of Advancement of Patient Blood Management, Thrombosis and Haemostasis (NATA), European Academy of Sciences and Arts, International Multidisciplinary Autotransfusion Study Group (GIEMSA), Anaemia Working Group España (AWGE), Spanish Society of Haematology and Haemotherapy (SEHH), and Spanish Society of Critical Care Medicine. He serves on the Board of Directors or as Coordinator of some of these societies and groups.
